I feel the same way about rabbits as you do about snail. Only problem is I have trouble catching rabbits!

Yah Carol,
everybody thinks they're so cute and fuzzy until their vegetable garden gets mowed down. I here ya sister.

And the fur makes them stick to the bottom of your garden boots.

Wow now that is some snail damage. I have only found one this year and it was tiny and almost, almost, almost felt bad about stepping on it.

But after hearing the *crunch* I got a very satisfying feeling and wished they were more numerous in the garden.

How sad.... I love snails. Yes, even though they "enjoy" our gardens, they are part of the "circle of life" too. When I find snails, I just aim them towards my neighbors properties. Or take them across the street and put them in the gutter area across the way. I could never kill them - that is too cruel...

well, i've seen from a previous post that you're fine with snakes. if you're ok with other reptiles, too, a blue-tongue skink could be a good idea here. they make great pets and are relatively easy to care for- much easier than a dog or cat, at least (and your kids will love it!) the best part is, they absolutely love to eat snails! although you couldn't let it roam free in the garden, now you might have some place to put all those dead snails so the ucky carcasses aren't strewn all about the otherwise pretty and petite garden. (plus, it'll get those "circle of life" commenters to quiet down a bit!)

Jeremy,
I love snakes and lizards. The sharp-tailed snakes which are frequent visitors in my garden do a good job keeping the population at bay as do the toads. The blue-tongued-skink sounds interesting but I think I will stick with indigenous species. Thank you for the idea though. Take care.
